Frisco High School to test its student-athletes this fall for steroid use

Frisco High School (FHS) in Collin County, Texas will begin testing its student-athletes this fall for steroid use as part of the school's random drug testing policy for student-athletes. Currently student-athletes are randomly tested six times a year for illegal drug and alcohol use. FHS Athletic Director David Kuykendall says that while there is no evidence of steroid use in the school, school officials believe the new policy "is a proactive approach." The school's decision was influenced by recent revelations of steroid use by student-athletes at another Texas high school. The University Interscholastic League, which oversees high school athletics in Texas, is also considering a statewide steroid testing program. A recent Dallas Morning News survey found that at least 22 public school districts in Texas have mandatory drug testing programs and that at least eight of those districts test for steroids. Mr. Kuykendall believes the test is a valuable tool for counteracting pressure to use drugs. "When peer pressure comes, they have an out," he said. "It gives the kids a reason to say no."
