Norman D. Wooten

Norman Wooten, a school board member from Kodiak, Alaska, was elected as the 2007-2008 President of the National School Boards Association (NSBA).   Wooten was elected to a one-year term by the Association's 150-member Delegate Assembly at the NSBA's Annual Conference in San Francisco, California in April 2007.  He has been a member of the NSBA board of directors since 2000.

Wooten has served on the Kodiak Island Borough Board of Education since 1990. He has served in numerous positions and various committees, including two terms as president.

Wooten was elected to the Association of Alaska School Boards (AASB) in 1993 and has served twice as president. He has been appointed by the Governor and other educational organizations as a school board representative to numerous committees. He served on the task force which developed Alaska's school board standards and has been one of AASB's spokespersons in encouraging adoption by local boards. In 1997, he was named Alaska's Outstanding School Board Member of the Year.

Active in the community, Wooten has been involved in the Boy Scouts, Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and Little League. He serves on the board of directors for the Kodiak Island Health Care Foundation, board of advisors for Kodiak College, and Citizens Advisory Council of the University of Alaska Anchorage.

He is retired from the position of executive director of the Kodiak Chamber of Commerce and was previously employed as a construction inspector for the U.S. Coast Guard.
