Dr. John Bonaiuto is the executive director of the Nebraska Association of School boards, serving in this position since 1995. Prior to joining NASB, Bonaiuto was a professional educator for twenty-five years. His teaching career began in Ralston, Nebraska as an elementary school teacher. After several years in the classroom Bonaiuto decided to make the move to the principalship, and became a building administrator in North Bend, Nebraska for a K-6 school.
Although he enjoyed being a principal, Bonaiuto wanted to work at the district office level and accepted the position of curriculum director for the Brookings School District in South Dakota. In the same district, he became assistant superintendent for administration, responsible for curriculum and finances which allowed me to match budget with the education plan of the board and community. Later, Bonaiuto became superintendent of the Vermillion School District in South Dakota, his experience and skills working with board and community were put to good use leading a progressive K-12 district.
While serving as superintendent, Bonaiuto was approached by the Governor of South Dakota and was appointed to his cabinet to head the state department of education. Bonaiuto headed the agency for five years, and as chief state school officer worked with the South Dakota Board of Education and the state's 178 school districts.
