Dr. Edwin "Ed" Dunlap, Jr., joined the staff of the North Carolina School Boards Association 1979. He was responsible for legislative issues and board training. In 1980 he was named assistant executive director and in 1985 associate executive director. He became the executive director in 1994.
Dunlap was responsible for establishing the NCSBA Academy for School Boardsmanship; the Association's board development program. He conceptualized and marketed the Association's successful risk management program, the North Carolina School Boards Trust. Association activities include advocacy before the General Assembly; Congress, and state and federal agencies; board development; policy assistance and legal representation; publications; special projects; and risk management.
Dunlap has a B.S. and M.Ed. from North Carolina State University and a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining NCSBA he was a classroom teacher and guidance counselor. He also worked for the dean of the School of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill.
