Employee Benefits Summary
NSBA provides salaries and benefits that are competitive with other employers in the metropolitan Washington, DC area. Regular full-time exempt and non-exempt employees are eligible for the following benefits:
Vacation
NSBA employees earn a maximum of 15 days of vacation leave per fiscal year for the first five years of employment. After completion of five years of service, employees may earn a maximum of 20 days of leave per fiscal year. After completion of fifteen years of service, employees may earn a maximum of 25 days of leave per fiscal year. Five days of accrued leave may be carried across each fiscal year.
Sick Leave
Full-time employees may accrue a maximum of twelve days of sick leave per fiscal year, up to a maximum accrual of 90 days.
Holidays
NSBA observes the following eleven paid holidays each year: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving (2 days) and Christmas Day. NSBA has designated Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday, Presidents' Day, Columbus Day and Veterans’ Day as floating holidays. Employees may elect to work on these days and take the holidays at another time during the fiscal year.
Paid Personal Leave
NSBA provides paid personal leave to accommodate employees in a variety of special situations, including bereavement, weddings, religious observances, illness in the family and other emergencies. The number of days available varies depending on the reason for the absence.
Health and Dental Insurance
NSBA offers employees two group health insurance plan options administered by Aetna. Employees may elect to enroll in the Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) or Aetna Choice® Point-of-Service (POS) plan. Both plans provide comprehensive health care coverage including medical, hospital services and prescriptions. In addition to contributing 90% of the cost of individual coverage, NSBA subsidizes approximately 60% of dependent premiums, as follows:

Aetna dental plan coverage is provided at no cost to eligible employees.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Employees may elect to enroll in flexible spending accounts to pay for eligible out-of-pocket medical and dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis. A maximum of $5,000 may be elected for each account per calendar year. Payments are made through payroll deduction.
Disability Income Protection
After completion of one year of service, NSBA provides employees with short and long term disability income insurance. In the event that an employee becomes disabled as a result of illness or injury, short term disability coverage guarantees employees up to 90 days of paid leave. Long-term disability insurance provides eligible employees a benefit of up to two-thirds their monthly salary if the period of disability extends beyond 90 days. The maximum long-term disability benefit is $10,000 per month.
Employees may elect to purchase additional short-term disability coverage through voluntary contributions, which is available upon date of hire. The maximum supplemental short-term disability benefit per month is 60% of the employee's monthly salary, to a maximum of $2500/month.
Life Insurance
NSBA provides employees with group term life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage in amounts equal to 2x their annual salary. This insurance coverage is effective as of the date of hire, and is provided at no cost to employees. Limited coverage for dependents is also provided at no charge. Employees may elect to increase their coverage amount up to 2x their salary through voluntary contributions, and NSBA will pay half the premium for this additional life insurance.
Travel Accident Insurance
NSBA provides travel accident insurance up to $250,000 for employees traveling on NSBA business.
Tax Deferred Annuity Program
Employees may elect to participate in tax-deferred 403(b) annuity programs as a supplemental means of employee retirement savings and planning. Funds may be contributed on a pre-tax basis through ING or VALIC retirement plan accounts.
Pension Plan
After completion of one year of employment, employees are eligible to participate in the NSBA pension plan. Participants are fully vested after completion of five years of service at NSBA, at a minimum of 1,000 hours worked per year.
College Savings Plan
Employees may elect to participate in 529 college savings plans as a supplemental means of accumulating savings for the college education of a child. Funds may be contributed through ING, VALIC, or Lincoln Financial Services plan accounts.
Tuition Reimbursement
NSBA provides reimbursement for eligible educational expenses to a maximum of $2,000 per calendar year. Some expenses may be subject to state and federal income taxes.
Flex Time
The core work hours at NSBA are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Full-time employees work a 7 hour day, 35 hour week. With supervisory approval, employees may elect to adopt a flexible work schedule and vary their work hours to start between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Metrochek
NSBA subsidizes employee public transportation costs by providing $80 per month on a SmarTrip card or in Metrochek vouchers. These funds may be used for a variety of transit services for travel between home and work, and are not transferable. Eligible employees may elect to deduct pre-tax funds from their paychecks for additional transit expenses not covered by NSBA’s subsidy and/or parking expenses in Metro-operated parking lots. Employees with NSBA parking privileges are not eligible to receive the direct transportation subsidy.
Parking
NSBA provides free parking for eligible employees. Parking permits in the NSBA lot are provided as available, on the basis of seniority. Currently, there is a waiting period of two to three years for parking privileges. NSBA also leases spaces at offsite parking lots, as available, that employees may rent on a monthly basis. NSBA offers a pre-tax parking benefit to defray the cost of parking expenses for eligible employees.
Employee Assistance Program
NSBA provides employees access to an employee assistance program (EAP) through INOVA Healthcare. This service provides professional, confidential assistance to employees and their families for a variety of personal circumstances.
Legal Services
NSBA offers employees and their families a pre-paid legal service plan, which covers general legal services. Plan attorney firms are located throughout the Metropolitan Washington, D. C. area. The cost of premiums is fully paid by employees.
Credit Union
NSBA employees are eligible to join the Premier Federal Credit Union.
Teleworking
NSBA supports teleworking when such an arrangement can benefit both the organization and the employee. Teleworking is a voluntary work alternative that may be appropriate for some employees and some jobs. It allows employees to work at home instead of physically traveling to the office every day. In general, employees are only eligible to enter into teleworking arrangements after completion of a minimum of twelve months of continuous employment.
