A new “AI Guidance for Schools Toolkit” is filled with real-world examples and practical resources developed in collaboration with TeachAI partners, including NSBA. The toolkit is designed to help education authorities, school leaders, and teachers create thoughtful guidance to help their communities realize the potential benefits of incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) in primary and secondary education while understanding and mitigating the potential risks.

The toolkit includes 7 Principles for AI in Education: 1) Use AI to help all students achieve educational goals; Promote AI literacy; Advance academic integrity; Regularly assess the impacts of AI; Reaffirm adherence to existing policies; Realize the benefits of AI and address the risks; Maintain human decision-making when using AI.

At the heart of the toolkit is a sample guidance section that an education system could provide to individual schools. It can be used as a reference during guidance development and customized to specific contexts. It includes responsible and prohibited uses of AI tools, each divided into three categories: student learning; teacher support; and school management and operations. It also includes sample considerations for language that can be added to existing policies, such as responsible use policies, privacy policies, and academic integrity policies.
